The headline findings

London pays a third more for the same spanner. At the top of each range, a London full service (£365) costs 37% more than the same work in Belfast (£265). The car is the same, the oil is the same, the checklist is the same. The difference is rent, wages and what the local market will bear.

The North-South gap is real but smaller than the London gap. Outside London, the spread between the dearest big city (Bristol) and the cheapest (Belfast) is around 16%. For garage bills, London is its own country.

Wales sits below the national average. Cardiff drivers pay around 6% less than the UK typical figure, one of the better-value big cities in Britain.

The dealer gap dwarfs the city gap everywhere. Whatever your city, the bigger money decision is independent versus main dealer: dealers charge 50-85% more for identical servicing. A Londoner using a good independent still pays less than a Newcastle driver using a franchise dealer. Full numbers in our dealer vs independent study.

Why prices differ this much

Labour rate is the whole story. Parts cost roughly the same everywhere, a filter is a filter in Belfast or Brixton. But an independent garage hour runs £45-£60 in the North East and £70-£95 in Greater London, and a full service is mostly labour. Higher rents, higher wages, higher everything flows straight into the hourly rate.

What drivers should do with this

You cannot move house to save on servicing, but you can price your exact car before anyone quotes you, which is what this site does free: enter your reg above and you get the fair independent range for your specific model, not a national guess. If you live on a city border, garages a few miles out of town often charge suburban rates for identical work.

Common questions

Which UK city has the most expensive car servicing in 2026?

London, at £220-£365 for a full service at an independent garage, around 22% above the national typical range. At the top end that is 37% more than the same service in Belfast.

Which UK city has the cheapest car servicing?

Belfast and Newcastle, where a full service runs £160-£270 at an independent garage, roughly 9-10% below the national typical figure for identical work.

Why is car servicing so much more expensive in London?

Labour rates. Parts cost the same nationwide, but a London independent garage hour runs £70-£95 against £45-£60 in the North East, driven by rent and wages. A full service is mostly labour, so the gap flows straight through.
